What's New?

I've been working on a ring for my metal-smithing class. I know I still need to post pics of the last project, but I don't have them, yet, so I'll give a preview of the ring. I'm really excited to see it when I'm done! I cut the shank from a piece of 14 gauge sterling silver, then annealed and bent it to shape. I've already but the base and prongs for the piece that will hold the stone. I used brass for this part because I think it looks great next to the black stone. Next step is to solder it all together then I'll bend my prongs into place. I'm hoping to finish up in Monday's class!

Class

I've started taking a metal-smithing/bench jewelry class. I'm pretty excited to learn new techniques as well as metal work and fabrication. Our first project was earrings out of recycled aluminum cans and copper on sterling silver.  For my first finished pair I used a jewelers hand saw to cut out a copper coffin and scissors for the aluminum can ghost. The jump rings and ear hooks are hand formed (by me!).

Amethyst Bracelets

I finished a couple of beautiful amethyst bracelets while working on the fun new fall pieces.  I'll be putting them up on Etsy soon. They both have polished amethyst nuggets and sterling silver clasps. One features irregular (imperfect) fresh water pearl coins, and the other is made with 4 mm Swarovski "pearls."

Remember, amethyst is a protector and guides your spiritual center.  What better place to wear it than on your wrist where you have constant skin contact as well as the visual reminder.

Start to Finish

I came across some pretty ocean-like bluish green beads with cool streaks of sand color through some. I used them to make a beautiful little bracelet and documented parts of the process.

First you need to gather the material:

10mm Amazonite beads,14mm natural pearl coins, sterling silver wire, round nose pliers, wire cutters

Then you form loops around the beads. I also switched to 4mm pearl beads instead of the coins. Changing your mind is part of the process too :)

Next you loop everything together

 Make sure it fits

Finally, add your clasp and voila! Beautiful bracelet.

Sneak Peak

I've started work on some new pieces for fall. I've finished the designs and pulled the material and I'm really excited about them! The focus will be red and black stones on oxidized ("antiqued") sterling silver and antique-brass colored metal. I've found some fun cameos and I'm bringing back more tassels. Check out the preview of materials and keep checking back for more updates.

I've been taking some online courses, so I haven't made any new jewelry but I did make sun tea!

This amethyst slice is stunning. My favorite side is shown in the picture above, where you can see more of the stone core, but I've included a picture below of the other side which shows more of the purple. You can wear it either way!
